Hi, thank you for taking the time to try it out and let me know about it. I'll have to figure it out and see if I can fix it.

Thanks again, I'm happy someone used it lol

Show HN: A Word Matching Game

https://artificesoftware.com/interactives/synonym-antonym-game.html

I made a simple synonym and antonym word matching game. You're given a word, and you have to match the other related words to their proper group. It's written entirely in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. It even works on mobile, though it's a bit squished. Making it gave me some ideas for a better version of the game, and building it out gave me some more JavaScript experience. This is technically the...

Same, there's something magical about using computers to look at genes. And thanks for your honest review.

I took a look at your blog and spent some time playing the Aladdin game, I liked that it got comically fast. One thing I really loved on your site is the changing profile picture every time you scroll away, that's a fun touch.

Because I'm too lazy to unsubscribe. It's cheap so it's not high on my list of things to do, lol.

I think you're right, haha

Thank you for the feedback. Would you say the gigantic font is distracting? I have yet to add a proper mobile style, so it's even larger if you're reading on a phone, lol.

Are you doing similar work now? I haven't returned to anything bioinformatics related, though I do miss it.

Re:Kagi Small Web on Tuesday March 17, 2026 @08:17AM (#47411637)
People say that, but on the other hand companies like Google have a lot of much better ways of categorizing things now than they did in the past. I'm not sure I buy the excuse of "gosh, it's just too hard for us :(" from this international company worth trillions employing geniuses.

It really feels either intentional or egregiously incompetent.

Drones took the jobs of angry mobs and the world will never be the same.

The enshittification of everything has really put a damper on the technological optimism that seemed to be the norm back then.
Re:Kagi Small Web on Tuesday March 17, 2026 @08:02AM (#47411492)
I feel the same way. I'm probably going to end my subscription at some point, but right now the effort involved is what's keeping me with Kagi.
Re:Kagi Small Web on Tuesday March 17, 2026 @08:01AM (#47411479)
Whatever it was called, it was way better than whatever Google is doing currently.
I am not surprised that this happened. This is the logical conclusion of betting. Like in Muay Thai competitions, some efficient attacks are underutilized because they give the performer fewer points, which can be bad for the people betting on them. And their funding comes from the betting, so they change the sport to match what the gamblers want.

You can't introduce gambling into a system without changing other parts of the system.

Re:Kagi Small Web on Tuesday March 17, 2026 @07:40AM (#47411311)
I've been using the Kagi search engine for months now and I'm not impressed. I bought into it because there were a lot of posts saying that it was "just like old Google" but this has not been my experience. It's the same as new Google, you can type in what you're looking for exactly and you'll get random sort-of related websites.

I remember when you could half-remember a comment from a website, type that into Google, and get taken to the article you were looking for. That was back in like 2010. To me that's the old, and useful, search engine that I want.

And a writing prompt generator from years ago that I resurrected and still love: https://writecomfy.com/

Thanks for checking it out.

Re:I Wasted 8 Years of My Life in Crypto on Monday December 08, 2025 @07:13AM (#46191356)
It's not a complete waste. 8 years is a lot of time spent learning to build a tool that, sure, might not have been "good" but it was still time spent building a tool. Those skills are applicable elsewhere, and perhaps the most important thing to realize is that at least the time wasn't spent on NFTs.

Show HN: An Online Unit Conversion Calculator

https://calculateconversion.com/

This is a pet project, an online unit converter that I built in my spare time. It also has pages describing the units (a work in progress), and even a secret page you might not be able to find. I plan on adding pages describing physical constants and the scientists responsible for the units. Thanks for taking a look.

Re:My six stages of learning to be a socially normal person on Tuesday November 18, 2025 @07:17AM (#45964551)
This may only be tangentially related, but a good piece of advice I heard once was "Don't try to be cool (ie. impressive), try to be nice."

I think it goes a long way in treating people properly.

Re:Are you stuck in movie logic? on Tuesday November 18, 2025 @07:12AM (#45964455)
I have had friends fail to communicate in astounding ways. Once, four of us were planning to go somewhere. A friend suggested somewhere else, I and my other friend agreed, but the fourth friend was not presnet. I told my first friend to tell the one person who was not present about the change in plans. He asks why... I tell him, well, the other guy isn't going to know we changed plans because he isn't here.

Basic communication goes a long way.
