News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

Artemix

Almost did the same, except I went towards Syncthing for document sync, KeePassXC for passwords, and Sailfish / degoogled android for mobile phone (because the apple ecosystem is imho much worse, especially in terms of software durability. Got two perfectly working ipads just sitting around because apple said fuck the devs and users. At least, with SOS and android, I can still develop for them).
I use a RSS feed aggregator, which I curate with blogs and websites I discover and want to follow.
Another huge issue with the `.io` domain is about [ethics](http://www.thedarksideof.io/).
Re:Ask HN: Curious to know if people still use IRC? on Tuesday December 03, 2019 @11:57AM (#21694084)
I use IRC for tech / general chat on a local server.

Much better and cleaner experience than Discord, Slack, or other fat alternatives.

Re:Ask HN: What do you self-host? on Sunday October 13, 2019 @09:50AM (#21240330)
I self-host the following services:

    syncthing
    nfs server
UPnP server, connected to my media NAS
gitea server, for my personal projects
droneci, linked to my gitea server, for building websites and releases I publish
A few locally hosted services, such as DevDocs, draw.io or Asciiflow, for convenience.

Here's a list of proper services:

I'm using Gandi (a french company) right now without an issue, too.

Re:Ask HN: What keyboard do you use? on Sunday August 04, 2019 @06:53AM (#20605657)
I use the Corsair K70 Lux keyboard, with red mecanical switches.

When working on my work's mac, I use a dell KB216 (much more silent, while still comfortable)

Re:Ask HN: What wiki/intranet do you use at your company? on Friday August 02, 2019 @11:13AM (#20593580)
Our wiki is a static site generated with the MkDocs tool (Material theme), auto-published on our internal web server through a dumb CI pipeline (a PHP webhook building the website).
Re:Ask HN: Projects and applications for e-ink displays on Wednesday July 10, 2019 @08:42AM (#20401384)
- Ebook-like reading tools

- Watches, low-power embedded displays

- Low-cost screens

Re:0x00: What are you learning this week? on Monday July 01, 2019 @07:35AM (#20324322)
Haskell, mainly to work on GUIs.

Also, continuing to learn Ansible.

Re:Ask HN: How to reliably register domains in Europe? on Sunday June 30, 2019 @09:26AM (#20318077)
I second gandi.

A very good UI/UX on their web service, a clear API that's usually well supported for domain TLS auth (certbot), a very complete documentation, and a good support.

Re:Family domain name extension choices on Friday June 28, 2019 @02:03PM (#20307129)
The latter may lead to some registrar problem, and the former would be fine, but I'd recommend the format following `[email protected]` or `[email protected]` (or even with a `-` in-between `surname` and `family`).
I'll try that, thanks

Ask HN: Need help finding some programmable AR glasses with low specs

I recently started spending some time working with hardware-related stuff, components, protocols, etc., and one thing I'd like to play around would be an embedded display on "me".Nowadays, we can find a lot of 700+$ AR glasses featuring stuff like 720p full-color displays, audio, etc, but I don't give a damn about most features, and most glasses are based on restricted closed-source systems.I'm...

Re:Ask HN: Best Android phone under $400? on Wednesday June 12, 2019 @01:24PM (#20167057)
I like the Sony XPeria XA2 phone, which doesn't seem to be shipped with a weird android version, has a lot of custom ROMs and is well-supported.
You can use pihole to block lots of websites on a DNS level, that's always a good first step.

Browser settings that should be done are: - disabling loading of external fonts - adding the ublock origin extension, priceless to "lighten" websites by removing as much crap as possible - aggressive resource caching, especially for CDN-based libraries

Re:Ask HN: Why do you use Azure? on Tuesday June 04, 2019 @05:17AM (#20093309)
Clearer dashboard, much clearer and more complete docs (compared to AWS I've been working with).

Also, I'm really a fan of DevOps, the dashboard is really complete and versatile, and allows for more serious planning than just issues.

I don't have trouble working with Azure, including for user management and access rights, where it's always been a hell in AWS to learn.

About GCP, I can't compare, they never accepted my bank credentials.

Sugar is a drug, so I guess that addiction can play here.

There's not a lot of regulations for health and safety around most ingredients, so I'd say that also plays:

Fewer risks of decay and such

Re:Ask HN: Alternative to Google Services? on Monday May 20, 2019 @10:54AM (#19960932)
GMail -> FastMail -> With the latest shitty AU laws, I'd advise against this provider (speaking as an old customer who really liked the service). https://privacytools.io/ provides a decent e-mail service list

Browser -> Firefox? So you completely drop the Chromium rendering engine (plus, firefox is awesome)

Photos -> what is your need, exactly?

We're a small company, and we have a company-wide NAS (which is backuped daily in a local backup server, and a S3 bucket).
Re:Scaleway cloud provider object storage unsecure on Monday April 15, 2019 @08:46AM (#19664884)
Hasn't it been removed? The link seems dead.
You should definitely move your domain name to your own country's registrar, or at least to a registrar that's known to show resistance to such legal abuse (targeting legal firms and big corps playing the big guns through this sentence).

As always, Privacy Tools have some good resources: https://www.privacytools.io/#dns
