Antrikshy

They have a shiny file system abstraction, but ever since they introduced that, they have allowed downloading arbitrary files into it AFAIK.

Disclosure: I wrote this. I don't think I've ever posted on HN. I looked through the FAQ. Hopefully this isn't breaking any rules!

Any possibility this is user-submitted panoramas, and maybe they don't charge for those?

The Pudding is one of the best things on the internet today.
Re:A gentle introduction to anchor positioning on Wednesday August 13, 2025 @02:28AM (#44885230)
`position-area` syntax feels a little tough to remember, but I'm glad top/right/bottom/left is still available.
Re:A gentle introduction to anchor positioning on Wednesday August 13, 2025 @02:28AM (#44885224)
That's fine for a lot of stuff. It becomes tricky to do certain other things. CSS-only tooltips are notoriously limited in scope.
Are you logged in? They’re only blocking suspicious bot like traffic on VPN. Logged in accounts can still use it over VPN.
Re:The Reddits on Friday March 22, 2024 @12:13AM (#39787421)
Old versions of Reddit (in Python IIRC) were open source. They just stopped updating it.
Re:The No Symbol: The History of the Red Circle-Slash on Sunday March 10, 2024 @11:44AM (#39660065)
Just type “no” in search and it should be one of the top options.
Re:Epic says Apple will reinstate developer account on Saturday March 09, 2024 @01:04AM (#39649754)
It’s not uncommon for VP to be a lower level exec title at massive companies like Apple.

They’re not low tier by any stretch compared to most employees. They’re still high level leaders.

Re:CSS for printing to paper on Sunday March 03, 2024 @09:24PM (#39586472)
I’ve never understood what everyone’s issue with PDF is.

It’s like digital, printed paper. Part of the reason is pretty much ubiquitous compatibility.

If it needs to be edited, just don’t print it on digital paper. Does the format have other issues?

Re:Netlify just sent me a $104K bill for a simple static site on Tuesday February 27, 2024 @03:20PM (#39529264)
There's good discussion on this here, and on Reddit.

In addition to all of that, the real moral of the story is to not use anything with dynamic billing for personal projects, even if there is a free tier. Always ensure that the free tier does not automatically turn into a paid tier.

That said, I've never used Netlify, so I don't know how they present this service at the time of signing up.

GitHub Pages is great for static sites, and included Jekyll build support is a bonus.

TIL! Fortunately, my state (Washington) is on the list. Unclear when it will be ready for use. Anyone know? I just signed up for their newsletter.
Re:iOS Wi-Fi Profile Generator on Sunday December 31, 2023 @01:17PM (#38826163)
Would be perfect with a brief explanation of what this is and how to use the generated profile.

People who need profiles probably have better dedicated tools for the job. This website could be a nice educational resource for people who are unfamiliar but curious; it's just missing an explainer.

They'd either have been hired as a remote employee, or with an expectation to come to the office at some point. If that wasn't communicated, something went wrong at the time of hiring.

Pretty sure Amazon has always had virtual employees, and you should be able to request to switch, possibly with impact on your pay.

Re:The contagious visual blandness of Netflix on Sunday January 22, 2023 @02:04PM (#34481043)
I'm somewhere in the middle. I'd like to see movies use HFR like some movies use the IMAX aspect ratio.

Imagine Spider-Man: Far From Home in 24 fps, except it transitions to 48 fps in the Mysterio illusion scenes. Granted, this would spoil some moments in the movie, so it's not the perfect example.

I wish Avatar: TWoW was entirely 48 fps, OR it handled transitions better, like keeping it consistent across entire scenes.

Re:The contagious visual blandness of Netflix on Sunday January 22, 2023 @02:00PM (#34480983)
I haven't seen this movie, but I could see that. There are definitely some movies that use this quality as a part of their setting. See: Gunpowder Milkshake.
Re:The contagious visual blandness of Netflix on Sunday January 22, 2023 @01:58PM (#34480965)
It may just be confirmation bias, but I've been noticing this with some scenes set in the outdoors shot in front of LED walls. They have almost too beautifully perfect, almost colorful lighting conditions.

Examples that come to mind right now:

1. Scene in The Batman where Bruce and Selina have a moment in the under construction tower at golden hour. Maybe some other scenes in that movie too. 2. The entire opening sequence in Thor: Love and Thunder.

It's called falloff, I think.

And yeah, it's the effect of some anamorphic lenses.

Re:Summer Afternoon – A WebGL Experiment on Saturday January 21, 2023 @03:12AM (#34464792)
The 80s is the perfect sweet spot for my go-back-in-time-and-share-modern-tech fantasies. It's recent enough for people to know about computers but just barely enough that they'd be absolutely blown away.
Re:Homebrew (brew.sh) guy has gone full blockchain/Web3 on Sunday November 20, 2022 @01:22PM (#33683643)
Yeah, the HN post title is sensationalist. I'm not "full blockchain/Web3", but (having not looked at it too closely) Tea seems like a nice idea on paper. Homebrew doesn't seem to have changed or stopped working.

Let him try new things!

Yup! Very clever game.
Re:Amazon Is Said to Plan to Lay Off Thousands of Employees on Monday November 14, 2022 @01:20PM (#33598451)
Maybe recession?
Re:There was a stretch where phone design went bananas on Monday November 14, 2022 @01:15PM (#33598373)
Hardware may be less interesting, but the software is way more dynamic than ever.
Re:Twilio to lay off 11% of workforce on Wednesday September 14, 2022 @03:05PM (#32841774)
That should be a given. Why even bring it up?

It's like saying "I'm not racist" before doing something unrelated.

Vaguely reminds me of my own web sockets project from years ago, https://quibbler.co.
You can currently use Wallet and Apple Pay without unlocking the rest of the phone. I'm sure they've thought of this and probably made it so that only the license can be unlocked.
Re:Time to retire the CSV? on Wednesday August 18, 2021 @10:00PM (#28229497)
I stopped reading, so I may have missed it, but do they even address situations where humans interact with systems by supplying them with tabular data?
