One thing the US could do to make traffic lights a lot safer is copy eg France and only show the lights on the near side of the intersection.

In France, if you move up too far, you can no longer see what color the light is — consequently everyone waits back where they should.

In the US, you can edge out into the traffic and still see your light.

Re:Ternus to potentially squeeze more out of App Store on Sunday September 06, 2026 @02:11PM (#49589194)
"Ternus and services chief Eddy Cue want to make even more money from the App Store and figure out ways to raise margins and squeeze additional recurring revenue from the platform."

Re:Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1 on Wednesday September 02, 2026 @01:24AM (#49532090)
Today I plan to ask Claude to read a bunch of Feynman lectures, compare them to my last Claude session transcript, and come with a list of rules to be more like Feynman.

It'll go in CLAUDE.md

Presumably this is a very similar technique to watermarking AI-generated text.
Re:OpenAI model autonomously hacks HuggingFace on Wednesday July 22, 2026 @03:17AM (#49002945)
In a blog post, OpenAI said it was testing the capabilities of some of its most advanced models in a controlled environment but that the program managed to escape containment, reach the internet, and break into Hugging Face to try to satisfy its testing goal.

Hugging Face said in a blog post last week that it had been the target of a hack that was different from anything they had handled befor in that it was driven, end to end, by an autonomous AI agent system.

Show HN: a new paradigm for a smartphone camera interface

https://phase.buzz/interface/

In January I woke up in the middle of the night really mad at my iPhone camera. I couldn't stop thinking how complicated it is to do basic tasks while shooting photos: framing, adjusting the brightness and color etc.All night I kept getting up and writing down ideas about how the camera app could be easier to use. Here's the result — a proposal for a smartphone camera interface that uses...

This should be the top comment, at least for today.
Re:The end of public frontier models on Sunday June 21, 2026 @01:46PM (#48620936)
We see with the Mythos block that AI has begun to seem dangerous to the powers that be.

We can expect 1-3 more public frontier models before they are globally barred from public access as being too dangerous.

Which Quick Look extension? I've been looking for a good one.
Re:Chest Fridge (2009) on Sunday March 22, 2026 @02:42AM (#47475044)
Drawers would solve this in a vertical fridge.
All trucks have standard shipping container trailers. Europe has strict length limits for the overall cab/trailer that preclude a hood in front of the cab. There is great resistance to changing the law, even though long-nosed trucks are vastly more aerodynamic, because the law provides protection for european truck makers from American competition.
Re:The struggle of resizing windows on macOS Tahoe on Sunday January 11, 2026 @04:25PM (#46580261)
FWIW: option double click sny corner to make any window full-screen without going into full screen mode.

Double click any side or corner to move it to the edge of the screen, and hold down option to make the effect symmetric.

Re:Are the Three Musketeers allergic to muskets?(2014) on Wednesday December 10, 2025 @09:57AM (#46218396)
My guess is that the use of mousquetaires was more a reference to a specific corps of the military than to the weapon itself.

It would be like the gendarmes today — literally "armed people", even if they don't always carry an arm.

It would be nice to have details:

It rewards or penalizes online services depending on whether they agree to carry out “voluntary” scanning, effectively making intrusive monitoring a business expectation rather than a legal requirement.

Re:Whatever Happened to String Theory? on Sunday November 16, 2025 @02:54AM (#45943484)
This is a great article — just short texts by experts in their field who really know what they're talking about. It's very refreshing compared to all the rewritten and simplified articles one so often sees.
Re:Website Is Just an SVG on Sunday September 14, 2025 @03:23PM (#45242512)
See svija.com/en — all SVG websites ;-)
Re:Website Is Just an SVG on Sunday September 14, 2025 @03:23PM (#45242502)
Yes! We do that with svija.com/en — an all SVG website with an HYML wrapper so it displays at the correct size.
Re:Website Is Just an SVG on Sunday September 14, 2025 @03:21PM (#45242489)
We have been building all-SVG websites for six years – https:/svija.com/en

They do get indexed by Google, and we take some extra steps to ensure usability.

Re:iPhone Air on Wednesday September 10, 2025 @02:41AM (#45194100)
It's wild to see the HN crowd, bleeding-edge technologists, regularly bring up "lying flat on a table" as a critical feature for a supercomputer inside a camera that fits in your pocket.

Somebody (many somebodies?) is rolling over in his grave.

Re:Welcome to Url.town, Population 465 on Monday August 04, 2025 @05:27AM (#44783569)
Cool, but I'd like us to get past the idea that a site has to use Times font to be retro.

Times is really not adapted for the web and is particularly bad on low-resolution screens. How many computer terminals used Times for anything but Word processing?

Verdana was released in 1996 — is that too recent?

Re:Protecting My Attention at the Dopamine Carnival on Tuesday July 15, 2025 @02:06AM (#44568287)
I have always assumed that this was done to drive app usage. Companies hope that if you use an app regularly you'll keep it on the home screen of your phone, and it becomes a foothold into your most intimate device.
