I used to be on the DST camp, but a few years with a family and house of my own, and suddenly ST makes more sense. Then playing the game of placing oneself into somebody else’s shoes, and I realized that only young adults in rich countries really benefit from DST.
If you want to make money you start a vertical farming AgTech, which will not be profitable, but will attract the trendy funding. Pay yourself well while it last.
In term of general network analysis and visualization, I think logic, symbolism, Petri net, are underutilized. Probably because they require more CS and Math type of trained people to work on those than your typical biologist becoming bioinformatician learned to handle.
The main thing we see are individuals hoarding a product, setting up a shop to profiteer from an unfortunate and temporary event.
The situation is temporary and it would be a lousy business model to start developing a "new" product based on the possibility of asking a high price for a short period of time. The incumbents increase in revenue comes from additional number of sales, not from the price hike. What happens when the demand surge goes down? Who is more likely to stay?
The current problem is a lack of clear guidelines. To me it seems that the plan is to not have one.
Now, I do condone Musk's. I think his 9yo tantrum throwing behavior is on par with the child king staying at the WH.
I was planning to go through all of his replies to other posters and debunk them one-by-one.
Today we prefer to immunize with a part of the virus structure, which end up doing the same thing.
So when he started OneWeb and then Ob3 (or vice-versa) I was skeptical. Now, reading about OW, and how it was mostly a middleman, I would say I am not surprised at all that he would pull this one and blame a virus. With chapter 11 he gets to protect his equity and compensation
I expect him to rebound, with even better compensation.
Imagine a normal symmetric binomial distribution, along a X-axis of events and severity. Now imagine that the binomial distribution isn't normal and symmetric anymore, it is skewed toward the X-axis of more severe events (i.e. a negative skew). In this model, we still have the same number of events, but their distribution along the severity axis is skewed towards more severe events, and as such they have a higher probability of happening.
I just did a quick protein alignment and the %sequence identity between human and select animals are:
Bats: 81.5% Mice: 81.9% Dogs: 84.1% Cats: 85.2%
Did you simply just woke up and decided to troll?
India, like other warmer regions, has not been very active in the diagnostic. This is also what explains the low numbers you in Africa, Middle-East, and part of Asia.
Right now there is only one way that we currently have to stop this, and it is to do it Wuhan-style. Full lockdown for 8 weeks.
And forget about chloroquinone, studies published over the past 2 days are showing that it doesn't make a dent if you are already infected.
At first we didn't have enough test, but that ramped up quickly, then we didn't have enough RNA extraction reagent, now we don't have enough swabs, and soon is the collection media that will be missing.
There has been a call for more protective equipement. But as the situation gets worst, beds space, ventilator, and then staff are going to be the bottleneck.
If you google you'll find stories of people helping their local hospital by 3D printing parts for for respirators, and swabs. There's nothing cost effective about that, it's not fast, but it gets the job done. If you were to scale that, you would be competing for the same materials than manufacturers using injection molding or plastic dipping are.
Even the manufacturer/supplier warns that: "Negative results do not preclude SARS-CoV-2 infection and should not be used as the sole basis for patient management decisions. Negative results must be combined with clinical observations, patient history, and epidemiological information."
They also indicate: "The sensitivity is 97.90 %, the specificity is 91.77%."
But when you read the technical document you realize that this was for a subset of patient. The real numbers are 88.7% and 90.6% respectively, and again these are for severe cases.
There are a fair amount of studies who took the initial in vitro results (i.e. cell culture) suggesting non-specific antiviral activity (at that level coca-cola is also an antiviral, antimicrobial, and antitumoral, by the way), into animal or human, and they just did not pan out, because it isn't an antiviral.
An example: restaurant are struggling and some people need food. Give money to Town gov, so they can buy food from restaurants and serve that in community center. Adjust volume as needed.
Plus the whole financial easing they are trying is dumb. It would be useful if the intention was not to control what is happening with the public markets. We just do not really control those, not on a daily basis anyway. Algorithms heavily relying on market volatility control those, and that is what they are doing right now. So, seeing an administration believing that humans are in control of a mostly automated trading system is dumb.
While the evolution of new virus with pandemic property is not something we control. Its propagation to pandemic level is something we have absolute control on. We are failing as a society, because we allow those things to happen.
The opposite extreme would be to let everybody get infected, see >15% of the 65+ population die, which I am sure some economic model might favor.
I do hope, but doubt, that this crisis will start changing how our society manages crisis and is pro-active about it, rather than being reactive. I this point I don't care which banner a politician represents. I will only care for the one with a plan for direct accountability at the highest level. Otherwise they're all d-bag.
There's a phase 3 trial for treating pneumonia associated with coronavirus. This is based on prior work showing anti-inflammatory response in rheumatoid arthritis (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8278823).
Note that the trial is happening in China (https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT04261517), where the barriers of entry and approval are quite low.
That would imply 100% infection, at a base reproduction rate of 15 (close to measles), and a mortality rate of 30% (close to Ebola).
If left unchecked covid-19 would infect 100-250 millions Americans. The R0 is 2.5-3. The average mortality rate is said to probably be closer to 1% rather the 3.4% previously advanced, so 1-2.5 millions deaths, which we will hopefully never reach if people follow the current social distancing and self-quarantine guidance.
