NFTs and Evergrande, doing everyone a favor by taking money out of circulation
Well, certainly not on Robin Hood's servers.
It's had a huge revival the past two years. I got into it about seven years ago when it was still niche/"who shoots film anymore? Just get a sony a7!". Now the photography community has had a huge backlash against digital, especially in the hobby space.

Now it's very fashionable. Pretty ironic since the biggest destination for it is just Instagram, where it's a pixelated square but alas. The plus side is that the revived interest has led to more companies and people making and selling cool film stuff. New film types, accessories, labs opening. The biggest downside is that prices go up to match demand. Good film cameras are no longer being produced. There's a limited supply out there. And Kodak (the best color film producer, nothing beats Ektar 100) price increases are only matched by price increases at your lab to develop and get prints.

Film photography is an amazing hobby. It's a really fun artistic outlet that just about anybody can learn a lot about themselves with. You shoot for a year or two an you'll learn you have a style you like taking most. Maybe black and white architecture. Maybe golden hour landscapes. Rarely do other hobbies make you learn about your tastes as such.

Remote probably hurts in a log4j situation. There's no separation between work and home. You are expected to be ready at the drop of a hat.

Hopefully you are hourly at least and make up with sweet overtime. I apologize deeply if you are salaried.

I would not trust a surgeon to operate on me unless they have over 65 years of experience. I want them to have operated on patients since 'Nam. You went to a state medical school? Pfft. Go kill some other patient than me.

In all seriousness, your point brings up the idea of where does the responsibility for this immensely difficult task (securing networks) fall? If we could spread out the "required" 15 years of experience into each of the developers, would that have the same effect? Building software with security baked in would reduce the need for so much work after the fact.

That safety net is part of education. Schools keep children off the streets for 7 hours a day, offer reduced lunch. Investing in a social safety net is code for investing in public education.

During the popping of the Japanese real estate bubble, which saw the value of the land under the imperial palace as the same as the value of the entire state of California[1], mortgages were offered in 100 year terms[2].

In 1941, the New Deal Works Progress Administration surveyed most buildings in New York. Now, the street level photographs are mapped over the current site.

Prepare to lose an afternoon exploring.

Also available is a 1980s version.

You are picking up extra shifts on the Facebook PR defense today. I like the aggressive attitude. See you back at the Meta offices tomorrow! Can't wait for the company Halloween party over VR.

Meta is Hebrew for death, Swedish for Meth. Meta is a great corporate name for Facebook because it let's you choose your preferred analogy.
Re:After the pandemic, we can’t go back to sleep (2020) on Friday October 22, 2021 @10:17AM (#28957480)
Yeah, how can a narrative book like that be "debunked"? The author wasn't making a logical argument. There is no facts and data. It's an emotional and moral argument. Certain jobs contribute nothing to the world and extract a cost on the psyche of the employee.
I don't agree with this. It's about incentives. If you make it too painful to conduct this type of crime, perpetrators will give up.

Strategy video games (Civilization series, SimCity, Total War series, Tycoon games) are right on the knife edge of this. I love the process. I love playing the game. Especially total war. I love conquering my neighboring nations and living out historical fantasies. But the next day, I feel awful.

Yes, saw that too. Functionality is really limited. It's basically a Wikipedia command line parser. For instance, "current weather in Los Angeles" brings up nothing. "Current president of the USA" brings up nothing. But 2020 World Series Champion brings up a Wikipedia style summary.
Re:Worst Case on Monday October 11, 2021 @11:44AM (#28829624)
I think it would be the mother load for a ransomware gang. They would have many extortion opportunities. Pay us to get access back to your servers, pay us or we delete your data, pay us or we leak your internal data, pay us or we delete/leak your customers' data.

I'm sure that AWS has some of the greatest cybersecurity out there. But the potential massive cash opportunities make it such that why not try some easy attacks against them. Spending millions of dollars of labor to research and pull off an attack is likely only for nation states, but ransomware gangs should be walking by and testing the locks all day every day.

Re:Elite MBAs are no Longer Relevant on Friday October 08, 2021 @12:31PM (#28801151)
A few things in response to this.

1) I find it pretty damning of whatever jobs this poster is referring to. Are they so boring and singularly focused that having a broad education is a waste of time? Do they have say in any important decisions that cross disciplines? It's like when people say that a computer science or any higher education is unneeded to be a developer. It's true for a certain set of jobs, but those positions always seem very boring to me anyway.

2) The difference between education and Education. Higher education is not job training. It's not a YouTube tutorial. You are learning ways of thinking and analyzing, over the course of a few years with the direct help of paid teachers. When you have great teachers, anything is possible. If you think that any month long MOOC, tips-and-tricks blog post, or conference talk will have that effect on your brain, you're mistaken.

The Internet is the primary communication for large parts of the globe. If we let Facebook use this excuse that they are the Internet (which is sadly very true for poorer parts of the world where a smartphone is the only computer accessible), they must be regulated like a telecom provider.
Re:Facebook Is Weaker Than We Knew on Monday October 04, 2021 @12:07PM (#28748653)
Facebook has lost the moral battle. It can never regain that highground. With it, tech as a whole has lost it's darling status among media, politicians, and the general public. Maybe the first step was "The Social Network" by David Fincher in 2010.
