Even worse, they have to pay taxes in every state they play in because they're working in that state. It's called the jock tax.

I suspect it's a bit like the security field. Some are useful and bring value. Some are hired so when something goes wrong there's a person to blame and a head to axe.
Re:Ask HN: What is your opinion of “unlimited” PTO? on Wednesday January 11, 2023 @12:06PM (#34340939)
I think it depends entirely on the leadership team and company culture. I work for a company with unlimited PTO and it works well. They encourage people to take it and managers keep an eye on it to make sure you are taking it. Everyone I've worked with takes time without really worrying about it. Some people have even taken sabbaticals for 2-3 months (you have to be around a bit before you do that). Having said that, it does seem ripe for abuse with the wrong company. Also, I would rather take time than bank it for a payout.

This is both funny and depressing.
Is it possible she's doing it for her own sake? It might be that dressing up like that makes her feel better about herself. She might feel more confident and sexy when dressed up. I know I feel good with a shave, haircut, and a sharp outfit.

One issue with immutable data stores for businesses is compliance with things like GDPR. You need some mechanism for scrubbing data and its version history effectively making it non-immutable.

Yup, being poor is expensive.
Re:Bringing oxygen producing plants into your home on Friday August 03, 2018 @01:25PM (#17681697)
There was a pretty interesting TED talk on this subject that includes how they used indoor plants to help clear up the air at an office building in India.

Yes, they just won't run. Many sunny places don't have plows and such to handle snow. If it happens to snow, the entire place grinds to a halt. Even if the cars can handle the bad weather, the drivers are so unaccustomed to it that they're terrible on the road to the point of being very unsafe.

99% Invisible did a good episode about the Green Book. https://99percentinvisible.org/episode/the-green-book/
The company I worked at did a 2 week long hackathon. Another developer and I built a Ruby gem that creates service objects which integrate nicely into the Rail ecosystem. It was a bunch of fun and over time it ended up becoming a big part of our codebase. We open sourced it and it's done pretty well (https://github.com/orgsync/active_interaction). In fact, I was at a conference and met a guy who's company was using it. It was really cool to run into someone benefiting from my work.

Using j and k to scroll is really nice. One of my favorite things is that you can use marks. I'll mark where I am while reading, scroll back to check something, and then jump back to my mark. It's very handy.
If you have the time, go to local meetups. They can help you build a solid network and often have information about employers looking to hire. My last two jobs came from networking in this way.

If it's this importing why not propose it: https://bugs.ruby-lang.org/

Ruby has a place for this sort of thing and they'll answer you.

Re:My Little Sister Taught Me How to “Snapchat Like the Teens” on Wednesday February 10, 2016 @04:17PM (#11076054)
It's a video game for her. She doesn't look at the photos in the morning, she just responds to keep the chain going. It's like grinding. She has a score, tries to improve it, get trophies, new equipment (I mean filters), etc.

"Even when" as in he's not the reason the meetings occur. The boss is there because he too has things to report that inform the team.

> First we had to stand up every day and report what we did yesterday, you little child who we can't trust to work so we will micro-manage you.

If that's how stand-ups are treated then I'd say they're being done incorrectly. The point is to create visibility within the team. People know what's going on and can help, adjust their plans accordingly, etc. We do them even when the boss is out of the office.
