God created war so that Americans would learn geography. Like Trump's obsession with Greenland because he does not understand the Mercator projection...
Are you able to tell us a bit more about the Chinese Academy of Sciences saying there is no such thing as autism? I was curious but cannot find anything about this.

Is there a metric version?
Re:Ask HN: How did internet discover my subdomain? on Thursday March 06, 2025 @07:29PM (#43286457)
Did you ever email the URL to somebody? We had the same issue years ago where google seemed to be crawling/indexing new subdomains it finds in emails.
Agreed - I had to ask somebody else in the office to confirm they were seeing the same thing.

You would think this is the sort of thing that Atlassian could catch in test? Pretty fundamental, adding text.

NYTimes has the SecureDrop tip submission which uses Tor (see details at https://www.nytimes.com/tips)
Here is the Microsoft blog post mentioned in the nytimes article: https://blogs.microsoft.com/on-the-issues/2023/07/11/mitigat...
If you want to see the "warring magicians on South Park" scene mentioned in the article (actually they were 'psychic detectives'): https://youtu.be/22Tj_l4PcPs
This person is in North York (Canada), not New York.

I had to google 'The Machine Stops' - but it looks like a good read, thank you: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Machine_Stops

Thank you for replying to my questions in good faith.

Even single-celled life, such as bacteria? (I presume "no" for viruses and prions.)

Genuinely curious: We have a pet rescue greyhound who feels like a genuine part of the family - would you say he has a soul too? (I presume you would say my daughter's pet goldfish does not.)

> Stainless steel has better heat retention and distribution

I could be wrong, but I thought that cast iron has higher thermal conductivity (53 w/mK - watts per meter-Kelvin) then stainless steel (14 w/mK). Both are relatively poor thermal conductors compared to aluminum, however (>200 w/mK).

Perhaps he doesn't want to find a new place to live, in contrast to Assange and Moreno.

Seriously, I would love to hear Edward Snowden's opinion. Not much on his twitter about it though.

Unfortunately things have been moving this way, even for peripherals such as mice:

"This isn’t one way. If you’re the boss, you should do this too. I disagree and commit all the time."

Maybe the Echo team said it was too hard, and Bezos had to "disagree and commit".

The Free Speech Clause of the First Amendment prohibits only governmental, not private, abridgment of speech. [1]

A CDN is hardly the Internet Police.

Tell that to your security team.

Re:The internet is increasingly a low-trust society on Tuesday June 25, 2019 @12:11AM (#20271107)
Not only that: the exact same written text will appear more trustworthy depending on the typeface [1] (eg Baskerville > Helvetica > Comic Sans)

[1] https://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/08/08/hear-all-ye...

Question: At what point does maintaining the 737 type rating become too much "technical debt"? Why not create a new (modern) type that fills the same commercial requirements as the 737?
Re:Evernote just slashed 54 jobs, or 15 percent of its workforce on Thursday September 20, 2018 @12:58AM (#18029891)
I encourage you to have a look at Guillaume Chaslot's https://algotransparency.org - it identifies what videos YouTube's algorithm most often recommends, based on a given search. Serious question (I'm not trying to be facetious): looking at those recommendations, what do you think?
Re:Evernote just slashed 54 jobs, or 15 percent of its workforce on Wednesday September 19, 2018 @02:29AM (#18022180)
Perhaps via youtube's search and recommendation algorithms optimising for misinformation as an engagement strategy?
