Re:Why is Linux apt asking for Microsoft ppa? on Thursday September 19, 2024 @07:07PM (#41597270)
I'll just put Microsoft... with the rest of the fire (Canonical|Ubuntu|SystemD). https://youtu.be/1EBfxjSFAxQ?t=75
I have a triple boot setup. Every OS sucks so why not?

It doesn't hurt to have intact alternate OS's ready to go.

I might only use one Linux regularly but there's a devuan and a vanilla windows (+patches from ~1 year/6mo. ago) - it's really no big deal leaving them be. It's just disk space.

windows will probably get nuked soon cause it's on a gen4 NVME - not using that is a waste.

Re:Wiz walks away from $23B deal with Google on Tuesday July 23, 2024 @11:08PM (#41053295)
I did mean Wiz. I guess my brain just substituted that. I guess I'm at least familiar with the Wix name in that I saw ads all over the net ~a decade ago?
Re:Wiz walks away from $23B deal with Google on Tuesday July 23, 2024 @10:29PM (#41053108)
It is indeed. Thank you.
Re:Wiz walks away from $23B deal with Google on Tuesday July 23, 2024 @09:18PM (#41052744)
I very much doubt that. This as a phase doesn't even seem to exist online till today, even much less as an idiom, telling me the equivalent of "just google" for someone specific's thinking is entirely unhelpful.

I wasn't interested in what ChatGPT can hallucinate or even output. I was after Voloskaya's context, Voloskaya would be the one to provide this insight, which is who I chose to ask for that.

Re:Wiz walks away from $23B deal with Google on Tuesday July 23, 2024 @07:57PM (#41052312)
Not even knowing about Wix until today, I had no idea what to make of it, I wasn't trying to be snarky with that comment.

I was actually interested to know what they meant because it sounds like saying: "let's take a walk down to the top of the highest mountain".

> Using proper quotation marks and apostrophes today is easier than you’d think.

Proceeds to demonstrate, no, it really isn't - it's exactly how we thought.

Reality is: it truly and utterly does not matter. It's significantly slower to type and so will naturally lose every time. We're talking milli or micro oseconds vs maybe a minute or more to dig out the codepages, copy, paste or get the glyph, check the utf code, insert it by key combination. For every word with a quote or punctuation.

Yeah. Right. I'm not doing that.

Get over it.

I use my Samsung SyncMaster 245B as my daily driver - it's almost old enough to drive!

It was the only way to be certain.
No. Terrible people won because terrible people were in positions of power, as is the case often.

Good jobs, great jobs even, can and do turn to shit overnight. It's often the management itself.

People don't leave bad jobs they leave bad people.

The job is something in their life workers, in a non-slave market, can take control of.

There's no good reason for a person to stay working for nutters.

There's no good|sane reason to reward bad behavior.

They have ZERO obligation to fix a toxic workplace and culture.

That is management's failing entirely.

>your next company isn't getting a good employee.

Your next employee|team member isn't getting a good boss|colleague.

I turn off assistant - this will just be another thing to disable. I don't even use Google search anymore.

I want to bring all my data home again off cloud and when I do that I'll stop using all their services entirely.

No, that was the last straw. There's no more.

Supply and demand dictates buy buy buy. Straws are going to the moon!!!

EV's in Group B would be awesome!

Bring on Group B-EV

Well that was quite the read. Wow.

You can go to 96 GB.

Manglement is always about to spark a financial crisis.

That's not on us. That's on them.

Re:Ask HN: Do you still use DVD? on Thursday February 08, 2024 @05:23PM (#39308604)
Well I still have CD and DVD backups from ~2004. Most are intact, some CDs of less quality (I don't think any verbatim) have delaminated and would throw the aluminum around if inserted.

I don't use CD, DVD or BR as a backup medium. I might cut a USB flash drive to copy photos or tax/important docs etc.

Once upon a time a large part of my role was to maintain backups and disaster recovery - I'm pretty bad at it for myself. I have some important things in cloud, on phone, on computer. Super rare, if ever, will I cut copies onto cold storage.

My main backup method is - this drive is too small, copy everything on it to a larger disk and park it on the shelf.

I've lost a fair amount of data faithfully following this process. Mostly didn't matter as a lot of it is games. Possibly dashcam which sucks because of the efforts to store it but meh, it was near 100% mundane driving to and from work.

I believe it was a 2TB spinning rust controller failure - nuts. Just dead is dead - the data's probably physically is still there but I don't have a matched controller board to even begin to try. I probably wouldn't even if I did.

I've had an SSD just pack it in while using it. The one time I go to boot windows again in literal years it decides it'd be better off dead. If plugged in will get super hot to touch - to it's credit that drive was about 14 years service. Truly impressive.

Re:Ask HN: Hardware for Arducam Pi Hawk-eye on Thursday January 18, 2024 @06:00PM (#39049145)
I have one of these cameras and the Pi4b. It's just not powerful enough and I'm unsure if the Pi5b would be either and here in Australia - no supply in sight after waiting what 6months now?

I asked Arducam support and they said they do not know of any hardware to support the camera's maximum capabilities. I don't want to chain 4 together, I want a single camera performing as well as it can.

I have the pi4b on a gen4 nvme ssd via usb and streaming to network seemed the fastest - but the hardware cannot perform. I have a home network with 2.5 w/2* 10gb so the network shouldn't be problem with the right hardware and I'd like to push the camera to it's capabilities maximum.

Any hackers here used the Hawk-eye with non-raspberry hardware? Perhaps even just mount the camera to an HDMI interface board?

Pity to have such hardware and then find out you cannot use it.
