Re:Integers in C quiz on Sunday September 04, 2022 @09:02AM (#32712581)
Neat quiz. Reminds me that the absolute value of INT_MIN in C (and many other languages) is undefined, but will generally still return a negative value. This is a "gotcha" that a lot of people are unaware of.

We have them in Texas too. I’ve seen several in Austin and even one in Brownsville, a smaller city close to the Mexico border.

Yes, but with a few small hiccups [1][2]. I was lucky enough to order one, two minutes before it was supposed to drop.

Re:Apple’s new M1 Pro and M1 Max processors on Tuesday October 19, 2021 @12:13AM (#28914802)
While not that big of difference, the 14" is a little cheaper:

* The 14" MBP with M1 Max 10-core CPU, 24-core GPU, 32gb memory is $2,900

* The 14" MBP with M1 Max 10-core CPU, 32-core GPU, 32gb memory is $3,100.

The Mac mini with the Max variant chip will certainly be more than $1,000. But I expect it will be more reasonable than the MBPs, maybe $2,100 for the 32-core GPU version with 32gb of memory. That's how much the currently available Intel 6-core i7 Mac mini with 32gb of memory and 1TB of storage costs.

Sorry. Yoke.

Well you obviously don’t own a new Tesla Model S. The yolk steering wheel has capacitive buttons for signals and the horn [0].

That $99 price is for the Sketch program. The creator (Alin) just wanted a subscription model similar to it. The pro version of Lunar is $23 for a year of updates and support.
alin23 is the creator of Lunar and the author of this blog post. I'm just a fan of the program.
So what type of exploit is this? Is this a problem with smart contracts? Could this be a problem for other cryptocurrencies with smart contracts, like Ethereum?
Re:Global electric vehicles sales grew 41% in 2020 on Thursday April 29, 2021 @11:11AM (#26982185)
I’m in the same boat. I’ve been wanting a new (electric) car for a while but it’s so hard to pull the trigger when my old Toyota gets me from point A to B. Recently, I’ve been thinking all of the new safety features might be worth getting a new car before my current one is finished.

Stumbled upon this course a while back. I think some of the folks here could find the slides useful. While intended for engineers, I think it could be useful for other professions as well.
Re:Show HN: Vmctl/Vmcli – Easily Run Linux VMs on M1 Macs on Friday January 15, 2021 @02:11AM (#25787928)
Wow. This is fantastic. I had no idea Virtualization.framework was a thing. I've installed and tested vmctl/vmcli out on my M1 MacBook Air. Your instructions worked like a charm.

Edit: I don't see the option to list running VMs though. I was hoping to check that powering off the VM worked. The inability to ping the VM tells me it is off, but if I didn't have the IP, I don't know how I would check this.

Re:Hyundai buys Boston Dynamics for nearly $1B on Monday January 11, 2021 @08:09AM (#25728386)
Makes sense. South Korea, where Hyundai is based, has by far the most robots per manufacturing employee [1]. They will make good use of the technology.

Re:The Ultimate MacBook+PC Monitor Showdown on Saturday January 02, 2021 @02:02PM (#25615377)
In macOS there are side effects of scaling though, notably "blurry pixels," "shimmering," and increased GPU usage.

Here's [1] an article on why 1440p at 27" might be better.

Re:The Ultimate MacBook+PC Monitor Showdown on Saturday January 02, 2021 @01:15PM (#25614900)
IMO, the best MacBook monitor is the LG 38WN95CW ultrawide monitor [1].

Pros:

* Larger 38" screen

* 90w charging

* Thunderbolt 3 (like USB-C but better)

* 144hz refresh rate

* 1ms response rate

And current generation MacBooks only support one external monitor, so two 27" 1440p monitors should not be recommended. And there are methods to having more monitors, but they require additional hardware and do not always work well.

Cons:

* Hard to acquire (out-of-stock everywhere)

* Very expensive ($1,500+)

* Cannot natively control brightness & sound via keyboard like other LG monitors, but software [2] can add this feature. Though, this is currently broken for all M1 Macs.

* Does not support True Tone

Read a review [3] for more information.
