News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

I dont know if there is any simple way of achieving this. However, I had similar issues with sharing high quality images and whatsapp was not the right app for it. I setup slack for my parents on their phones and they share images and stuff on it. The free tier for slack works for me, and integrated tons of apps like dropbox, kayak and etc to it. But then this is more suited for close group, like in my case.
Agreed. However, if we consider a computer with complex AI capability(Jarvis), can it dream. Dream is kind of a state for us humans, similarly, If Jarvis goes to sleep what we can except, does it projects random thoughts and ideas. Can it dream about all those crazy ideas like humans do. It does kind of open up the possibilities of making a machine think more than he can achieve.

Ask HN: When I put my computer to sleep, does it dream like I do?

Hello HN,(Backstory) Yesterday I was asked to inspire a group of elementary students about Computer Science/Physics/Space/Galaxies/ and all the exciting stuff. It was nice to interact with these kids and inspire them.As I started talking about, AI and what companies like SpaceX and Magic Leap are trying to achieve. One of the students asked me. "When I put my computer to sleep, does it dream...

Does it need to be ran as root?

Downloading m-cli from git to /usr/local fatal: could not create work tree dir '/usr/local/m-cli': Permission denied Failed to clone => https://github.com/rgcr/m-cli.git

Off course it won't be able to access the /usr/local/

"It was never communicated which languages the coding test would be limited to before I started it. Those I could choose from were C, C++, Java and a couple of others, which ruined my plans to use Go or PHP - the languages I was the most proficient in. So I ended up choosing Java."

Similar thing happened to me. I was never told or asked which programming language I would prefer. I click the link, filled some info and I landed on programming question with only two choices C or C++. I was like wait?! Though, I tried to solve the problem, but couldn't finish on time. I contacted the recruiter about this and I never heard anything back. All I got was email, Sorry you didn't qualify. I really liked the Hackerrank interface, but I was disappointed in lack of language options I was given.

Thanks! I dont know how I missed that.
Re:How SQLite Is Tested on Monday June 20, 2016 @11:26AM (#11938609)
Did I miss something, because I didn't see performance testing. Given some specific test bed, which has X amount of RAM, How much Insertion Per Second(IPS) I can get?

More demos..I have used some photography apps and later it turned out that it was not exactly the feature I was looking for. Maybe, like preview mode, or videos?
Re:Linux from Scratch – build your own Linux distro on Friday June 03, 2016 @11:46AM (#11830991)
We use LFS at work and its base OS for our firmware. I started working on LFS like 5 years ago and we still use it(transitioning to CentOS minimal). One of the reason, my senior devs choose to stay with LFS was it simplicity and small footprint. We have been using LFS for almost a decade now. It was perfect fit for OS on 30GB SSD. Too much room for other stuff. One of the drawbacks I did saw is packages. Not easy as "yum install <>" and be done. Moreover, It got really tricky to get LFS working on AWS.
Re:Ask HN: Has TeamViewer has been compromised? on Wednesday June 01, 2016 @12:39PM (#11815863)
My co-worker told me that, he saw someone remotely controlling his home PC. The attacker opens browser and tried installing WebBrowserPassView. He said he saw paypal.com opened and soon he disconnected the network cable and shut down his router. I asked him if there were any port forwarding on his router and any remote access services running. All I remember him mentioning running TV on his computer.
Re:Ask HN: Using AngularJS 1.x in production? on Friday May 13, 2016 @03:53PM (#11692814)
> If you do end up going the angular route, i'd probably think long and hard about starting with 1.x instead of 2.

Thanks for bringing that up. This was next on my list. 1.x or 2?! I feel that angular 2 is gaining more attention and probably better(I haven't read much), I would stick to angular 1.x.

Re:Ask HN: Using AngularJS 1.x in production? on Friday May 13, 2016 @02:23PM (#11692209)
Precisely! I have been going to through the documentation and it amazes me every time I come across a directive. You are absolutely right, maintainability of code will be good enough for me to start migrating my app.
Re:Ask HN: Using AngularJS 1.x in production? on Friday May 13, 2016 @02:22PM (#11692200)
Sure, I will definitely look into it. Thank you.
Re:Ask HN: Using AngularJS 1.x in production? on Friday May 13, 2016 @01:56PM (#11692004)
Good point. I feel that my jQuery code is getting bloated, when I add more features to a page. Though, I am still a beginner when it comes too angularjs, but I find using controller and services would clean up code by a huge margin.
Re:Ask HN: Using AngularJS 1.x in production? on Friday May 13, 2016 @12:38PM (#11691398)
Thanks. Yes, I did read few things about Angularjs, mostly the bi-directional binding. Which is kool btw. I wanted to know if someone here is using AngularJS and what are their experiences.

Ask HN: Using AngularJS 1.x in production?

Hello HN,I am planning to re-write my web app in AngularJS 1.x. Currently I am using jQuery and it had worked fine so far. What are the benefits of using AngularJS in production over jQuery? Are you using it? Do you see a significant improvement in performance, etc..?

Re:Is This the World's First Ever Android PC? on Thursday April 28, 2016 @04:36PM (#11591727)
My co worker bought this last week and he brought to work and we were testing it out. Few thoughts

1. We tried Apps like Netfix, Youtube and twitch. The device plays does 1080p really good, however, there were some moments where we can see some sluggish behavior.

2. The Chrome browser experience was not that good. I tried it myself, there is no zoom?! I went to hacker news and I usually zoom, I couldn't do it. First every site opens in mobile format. Why? I thought this a Desktop? I request a desktop website for mlg.tv and video streaming was terrible. Firefox couldn't even load the video.

3. File explorer thingy is nice.

4. Installing an App was really smooth.

5. Needs a better desktop window manager. In case of twitch I had to like click on precise hidden location to get full screen working, otherwise you can see a back button toolbar on top of screen.

why did they got rid of the front facing speakers? I think that was nice. On the other hand Nexus 6 has it now. HTC M7 had some camera issues earlier too. In night mode it will show gradient purplish background on the images. I reported to HTC and they admitted that was a bug and got fixed.
Re:MacBooks are outdated, underpowered and overpriced on Thursday March 31, 2016 @11:21AM (#11397810)
I have a 16Gig 512 SSD Macbook pro and its faster than ever, since I have upgraded. As far as touchscreen on laptops is concerned; Steve Jobs mentioned that its not ergonomically correct. And I agree, I don't know how much long I can lift my fingers and touch the screen everytime I have to navigate. Apple has added lot of gestures on its track pad which is awesome.
Re:I switched to Android after 7 years of iOS on Wednesday March 23, 2016 @02:04PM (#11346775)
If I ever get a Android phone, it will be Nexus series. I had an HTC and I waited ages for Android 4 update because AT&T didn't had there "customized" version, with bunch of useless apps on it. On the other hand, my friend was able to upgrade to latest version of Android, because he was using Nexus. I switched to an iPhone and I loved it. Better battery life, and clean installation.

yayy!! This is just great! Congrats to Martin and Hellman.

Why it takes such long time for Computer Scientist to achieve such Award. DH Algo has been well known for long time. On the other hand Physicists(Theoretical, Astro, ...) dont have to wait too long to gain such recognition.

Are there similar results or survey for SSDs?

Ask HN: Best SSD for a database/application server?

HiI am trying to build a server for myself, which will have database and few web services. I looked up few known options like, Samsung Enterprise SSD, Intel S3710, OCZ Saber. The Intel are higher end models which are ~1.50/GB, expensive than Samsung and OCZ. Samsung has better read/writes and OCZ is better cost effective with 5 year warranty. Are there any other brands available? Which SSD is...

Re:Netflix Is Now Available Around the World on Wednesday January 06, 2016 @04:05PM (#10853765)
This is really great! I remember not while back my parents visited me and I introduced them to Netflix. While I am at work, they were happy browsing the shows, thanks for the quality content. However, my parents doesn't have that much bandwidth to stream 720p at their home. Moreover, the ISP has a data cap as well. So, its good to see that they will be able to watch the shows they liked, but limited internet access will be annoying. Cant say if the ISPs will flow and adopt accordingly.
Re:My Favorite Debug Ever on Tuesday January 05, 2016 @11:46AM (#10844201)
Great article! I had a similar experience, a Java programmer turned Linux Kernel programmer. The first think I remember doing was debugging a kernel panic using crash. It is not doubt challenging for Java/PHP programmers to debug C coredumps/KP, when there is pointer reference involved. But at the same time I learned a lot, specially memory management.

I have an iMac 27, Mini and MacBook pro they are all running CleanMyMac. The version 3 is one of the best mac apps I have used. It does the job! I have used some earlier version too, and every release is getting better. Thanks for the app!
Re:In Zimbabwe, We Don’t Cry for Lions on Wednesday August 05, 2015 @11:51AM (#10010639)
I grew up in small town in eastern part of India, where Tigers were rolling on the streets and wild elephants were more dangerous than any other animal. Just dont piss them off, that was told to anyone new in that area. My dad use to take me to elephant(trained off course) rides into the jungle(the real jungle) to watch tigers and all other wild animals. I started to enjoy it more and more. My uncle was a forest ranger and had a tiger cub, so I played with him every weekend or whenever I get a chance to visit him. One day I came to know a tiger was shot dead by "some guy" as kid I felt really bad, I was like "why kill a tiger for no reason?" I was more surprised when the local people were really sad about this. Like, they have develop some kind of affection to this animals, no matter how deadly they can be. An unspoken bond between the people and the wild animals. Off course the government was not going to investigate much about it, because of local corrupt officials. Officials were more concerned about food, jobs, education and medical facilities. Which took more highlight than the killing a tiger, which for majority of people in that locality was a big deal.
