In the future, people will look at these cases and shake their heads in disbelief. I hope the judges do the right thing here.

The publishers seem too attached to their licensing schemes. Speech-to-text and text-to-speech are here to stay and this is not a surprise for anyone. Publishers should catch up.

Well, time to pick up duolingo's Spanish course...

I really like your comment. As a scientist I'd say that a pragmatic solution (widely used in experimental sciences) is to calibrate your measures.

Want to use a yes/no? Fine (maybe 7 stars give better feedback, maybe not). But what should be the business decision based on the answer? How valuable is a yes? How costly a no?

My guess is that it uses analytical geometry to compute the equations of the drawn items. This also may includes a mapping to some canonical dimension(size) and orientation(rotations).

Also gmail is the default android app but I'd guess they have consider that.
Re:Google is discontinuing Inbox on Wednesday September 12, 2018 @04:32PM (#17972985)
This may be a case of following the data with disregard to the dynamics.

1. In the beginning there was G Mail and there where two camps(roughly):

  a. Those who made heavy use of e-mail, and where "adapted" to the user interface.

  b. Those who had problems with the UI(replying to all their emails, etc...)
Of those two camps: those in camp `a` where unlikely to switch. That would have interfered with their workflow.

Those in camp `b`, not all switched because people resist change. Change takes energy.

2. Then there was `Inbox`

Now, there is a subset of camp `b` which has adapted its workflow to use Inbox. The most satisfied ones are here complaining :).

They don't want to go back to G mail, but will be forced to.

The questions I would ask, if I were responsible for shutting down Inbox, are:

* How many people were leaving inbox for G mail? * Why?

Re:Teens who refuse to use social media on Wednesday August 29, 2018 @11:43AM (#17869090)
As stated elsewhere in this thread, social media is about collecting your data. This includes what you like, what you hate, what makes you happy, who you love, who you look up to, etc...

Now, this can be used to set your(not you but the social media user, no need to be an addict) mood and thus your emotions. This is what advertisers use to target ads or design them.

Your "intellect", in the short therm, is heavily dependent on your mood and your emotions. By "intellect", I'm referring to how you interact to the environment. (E.g. a sad person would interact with other people differently than a person that just made a million dollars).

So, if social media has such a handle on your emotions they have a handle on your intellect (its manifestations, which is the only thing other people can perceive ).

I would say "that intellect" is vulnerable. Because it is not serving your best interests. Because it's been manipulated to make you want to buy a new car, for example.

PS: I know this is controversial opinion and a lot of people will hate it. But I do believe this is the case given my current understanding of machine learning capabilities and human cognition.

If the revenue from the money transfers business is 30 billions per year and the cost of electricity is 0.12 U$D per KW/h. Then the cost, in energy terms, of the money transfer business is 250 TW/h in a year. This is a lower bound.[1]

Bitcoin miners are consuming in the order of 73TW/h[0] annually.

Let's consider those quantities equal for the next argument:

Isn't it a good thing that crypto is generating business for the energy sector? If those revenues are invested in more energy research it is favorable to human kind, isn't it?

Why deny the energy sector its business and favor the financial sector?

Just another data point, but for me it's the opposite. I drink mate every morning becasue its effect is softer than that of coffee.

I only drink coffee when I need extra alertness.

Meditation can also increase your hability to be alert without resorting to drinks.

Re:Theorem Proving in Lean on Monday May 28, 2018 @02:55PM (#17174093)
Obligatory mention to `coq` and `Software foundations`(SF).

`coq` is an amazing piece of software. SF makes you start prooving thing right from chapter one. Learn mathematics by doing. After going through the chapters of Logic Foundations I'm able to see the patterns in most mathematicals proof I come by.

Must read book if you want to acquire mathematical superpowers.

Coq tells you when you are wrong, but it doesn't provide you the solution either. So you have to work it up for yourself. The satisfaction of finding a proof and knowing it is right is hard to match( this is known as the video-game-effect). You'll even be able to spot slopy proof in text books.

I wonder how many different "cultures" do drivers have?

People from different localities drive differently. I hope they use drivers from say, NY, LA, and various small towns to teach the AI.

People that lives in towns with ~ 10k people drive differently that a new yorker on the same town.

EDIT: They might be training with a biased sample

Re:UK Defamation Act 2013 on Friday April 26, 2013 @03:06PM (#5614804)
To add to the point. IMHO this difamation laws are a patch to problem of people beliving blindly what they read. In times where the press was the most popular medium and few voices could be heard these laws had a reason of existence. In modern times, at least for now, everybody can speak on the internet and defend himself having the same reach as his attacker.

TL;DR Is someone difamatig you or your bussines? Post reliable evidence on the internet that shows what is what you actualy do and what other people think about it.

Re:Be Happier with Zero Expectation on Friday March 01, 2013 @03:20PM (#5306716)
This illustrates the way I see the "thing" with expectations: "They come from previos experience(including research as previos experience)". The Zen's mind, begginers' mind books suggets to keep your mind open to all outcomes, despite your experience (easier say than done, however).

It's hard(at least for me) to control expectations (I have evidence[bayes] that supports those expectations). In the other side, the outcome, is what actualy happened so you should add it to your evidence and update your prior beliefs for the next time.

TL;DR avoid expectation (not the real point); accept the outcome and update your experience (could be a better aproach)

In the case of clothing, limiting your choices seems just like a patch to the problem. When ever I find myself looking for an especific shirt I try to focus on the real problem: find a shirt. Same for shoping.

The more you condition the solution to a problem the harder it is to find it. Sometimes the problem is the solution I propose to the problem.

I've found this site extremely useful for fitness:

I know you are joking, but I don't think this is a bad idea nor an imposible one.
I think the glucose present in the cerebrospinal fluid is there for a reason. Probably not to power implants.

PS: I'm not a doctor.

To describe electromagnetic waves, or to write a solution to the wave equation, you need to use a system of coordinates. The most common by far is the rectangular system (x,y,z), but there are other ones: cylindrical coordinates, elliptical, spherical, and more. This is like choosing a base in a vector space. If you choose rectangular coordinates then your solutions are expressed as a linear combination of plane waves ( Cos(k*x-wt), k is wave vector, x is position, w is frequency and t is time ). If you choose cylindrical coordinates, then your solution will be spanned as a combination of bessel functions( more exactly cylindrical waves) whose parameters are called: OAM, spin, and momentum (in z axis). As nature doesn't care which coordinate system we choose and neither the wave equation, a solution in one system of coordinates y also a solution in another. In this case, a cylindrical wave can be expressed as an infinite combination of plane waves. So what this people seems to be saying is more or less: "Instead of emitting waves and, in the receiver, just measure the frequency; let's emit more complex patterns and, in the receiver, measure enough features of the wave ( not just the frequency) so that we can tell it apart from other signals.

I hope this helps.
