singleFile is great, and the extention works on fennec/waterfox on android as well (not sure about firefox mobile)

another one i use when i only need to save the text of a webpage is markdownload, which formats the page using markdown

Re:We should be more ambitious with the software we build on Sunday October 25, 2026 @04:26AM (#50229416)
an ambitious version of a note-taking program might be one that comes in pieces that you then put together by explaining to an AI what type of program you want, adding only the features you want and ignoring everything else

its always been a problem for me that ive never been able to find something that works exactly how i want, so i just put up with whatever is close enough, like obsidian for example. its probably because note taking is just a very personal thing so everyone is going to have different needs, and the amount of options out there is kind of proof of that

from the point of view of a developer, an AI would help with the complexity of a program that has every feature under the sun, and for the end user ian Ai would help the complexity of having to put all those modules together and making them work well

obviously each person could just vibe code their own program right now but each one would be starting from scratch. it would be more efficient to start with the same modules that have been tried and tested and then piece them together into something more standardised

i would love if this was a thing for most software actually. photoshop for example has only a dozen features that i ever use and the other 1000 features are wasted on me and just mean a longer startup time and a larger install size, but also i dont want want an AI to make me a custom version from scratch because you would probably spend more time trying to iron out all the weird bugs in it than actually using it

one needs an internet connection and a huge amount of energy to run, the other doesnt
Re:PipePipe: NewPipe hard fork implementing SponsorBlock on Sunday September 27, 2026 @02:22PM (#49869350)
theres an unofficial version of freetube on the f-droid store as well. the UI isnt great for small screens really but you would probably have any eaiser time transferring the settings and subs between devices
Re:F-Droid 2.0: A New Chapter for Android Freedom on Friday September 25, 2026 @03:26AM (#49841278)
droidify is a much nicer looking frontend for f-droid
Re:Stop Making TUIs on Sunday August 23, 2026 @01:51AM (#49406334)
why is it not right? ive been using it for years and everything works just fine
Re:Stop Making TUIs on Saturday August 22, 2026 @01:10PM (#49401625)
they wont work on android though. thats the main reason i started using more TUIs myself. i needed to be able to run a bunch of python scripts on linux, windows and android/termux. or if any of the linux phones ever matures, or sailfish, then the same scripts will run thereas well, probably without any modifications needed
if all that happens is the car beeping at them then i would imagine that number will stay at 50%
Re:US Govt to individually approve who gets GPT 5.6 on Sunday June 28, 2026 @06:37AM (#48706147)
no point really. if someone was forcing them to take this off the front page then they would probably just tell them to add that explanation to the thread as well
Re:U.S. government will decide who gets to use GPT-5.6 on Saturday June 27, 2026 @03:37AM (#48696057)
or just use a 4pt font and find a tattoo artist with a steady hand
Re:The Quiet Renovation at Bitwarden on Tuesday May 19, 2026 @03:02AM (#48190176)
im using pretty much the same setup myself

just to mention an alternative method for anyone that doesnt know: keepass also has a feature called 'autotype' where the desktop program can send keystrokes to fill in password fields

the benefit of this over the browser extension is that there is no connection between your browser and your keepass vault.

its also handy for filling in passwords in desktop programs or even a terminal

one downside is that you wont be able to have passwords automatically filled in as youre browsing. you need to press a hotkey, but i would consider this to be more of a good security feature to cut out any chance of your browser autofilling any hidden password fields

there is still a browser extension that i use that adds the url to the titlebar of the browser, which makes it easier for the autotype dialog to show the correct logins from your vault

Re:The Intolerable Hypocrisy of Cyberlibertarianism on Sunday May 10, 2026 @06:41AM (#48082719)
maybe give comaps a go. it uses openStreetMap for its map data. i dont know what routing algorithm it uses or how it compares to google/apple but i do like how easy it is to start routes with this app. and if it goes off course is fairly easy to just tap another road and the click "add stop" to have it re-route

another plus is being able to download as many map areas as you would like, and unlike google its actually giving you the full map data (although i havnt used google maps in over a decade now but i remember downloading a map once but then certain POIs would only show up when i had data/cell turned on)

they would have shut it down after 5 years
Re:OpenAI Livestream: ChatGPT Images 2.0 on Wednesday April 22, 2026 @09:20AM (#47863225)
sounds like a very efficient way for an indie band to lose all of their street cred at once
Re:Framework Laptop 13 Pro on Tuesday April 21, 2026 @03:25PM (#47853349)
how would they compare over 10-15 years though. with one you are able to swap out the motherboard when you want an upgrade and with the other you have to buy a completely new device.

then when it comes to repairing broken parts they are on opposite ends of the scale where apple actually go out of their way to make it harder for you to do that and its probably more expensive as well since only apple certified repair shops have access to certain parts

Re:Stop Using Ollama on Thursday April 16, 2026 @02:49PM (#47797778)
jan.ai would be the ideal route to take here then. its open source, has a simple chat interface, it uses llama.cpp, it lets you search for models and downloads them, and it supports .gguf so youre not locked in if you want to use the models with another program later on
Re:DaVinci Resolve releases Photo Editor on Tuesday April 14, 2026 @02:22AM (#47761927)
is davinci fusion not an after effects alternative? or is it not at the same level?
well, just based off that group photo of the openclaw developer and the staff at openai, i wouldnt be surprised if there was some truth to this
Re:Tailscale's new macOS home on Friday April 03, 2026 @03:09AM (#47624009)
tailscale has a feature called "funnel" that will let others connect to a service running on your tailnet, even if they dont use tailscale themselves
Re:Is anybody else bored of talking about AI? on Tuesday March 24, 2026 @07:53PM (#47511286)
you can at least block some of it out with ublock origin?

is Bitwig not as good as Ableton? ive never used Ableton so i wouldnt know, but Bitwig seems crazy good to me, especially compared to other DAWs on linux like Ardour or Reaper
its only a fork since a year ago so there isnt a major difference between to two in terms of features. see: https://www.comaps.app/support/how-do-the-features-differ-fr...

but i mainly meant its better just because its more community based now

Re:Migrating to the EU on Monday March 23, 2026 @12:43PM (#47491902)
just to piggyback off of this, theres also Pikapods (based in malta i think) that have about 100 or so self-hosted apps that can be installed with one-click and then you just pay depending on what you use. im more into self-hosting on my own hardware but its a nice option for people who want to get their feet wet or that dont have the time to manage a VPS themselves
Re:Migrating to the EU on Monday March 23, 2026 @12:36PM (#47491812)
i thought the same but ive actually moved twice now. first to protonmail whenever that came out, then again a few years ago to posteo. it actually didnt feel like that much work in the end. i set up forwarding and switched over a few accounts every week. i still kept my gmail account around for years just in case but there will be a point where you just know you have all the important things switched over
Re:Migrating to the EU on Monday March 23, 2026 @12:32PM (#47491761)
thunderbird (formerly k9 mail) is a decent enough android app, but im not very picky when it comes to email either so keep that in mind. ive been using it with posteo for about 2 years now
fennec (firefox mobile fork) lets you install ublock origin

newpipe or tubular for youtube. ive also been using freetube lately. its just the desktop ui ported to an android app so its not as good as newpipe, but im using syncthing to sync freetube's settings/subscriptions between desktop and mobile

comaps is better fork of organicmaps and has better people running it

the fossify apps are great for the basics, sms, phone/contacts, gallery, calculator etc

droidify is a nicer front end for the fdroid store imo

keepassdx for passwords

kde connect or localsend for one-off file transfers between devices, or syncthing for things you need to sync all the time

and hacki for hackernews!

i think rsshub can help with this, but im not 100% sure. its something you have to self host yourself, or pay a service like pikapods to run it for you
Autonomi seems like a good start
i would say its actually very easy. if someone doesnt have the smarts to know they are being scammed in the first place then not much is going to change in 24 hours when the scammers call back. the only hope is that this person mentions the call to someone else in the meantime
