The Internet has become a social surveillance panopticon. The author of that web page should stay out of that guy's private life. What's wrong about not having an online presence? My God how far the surveillance society has come. One more reason to stay anonymous online with everything you do, let alone someone be "concerned" about you... The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

Very well said about doing more harm than good. Yes this "well intentioned
" behavior can be a form of unintentional harassment, that is still harassment. It's like when you have a controlling partner that keeps tabs on you because he/she is insecure and worried about you all the time. No matter what the intention, it's still controlling behavior and it's unacceptable.

People have the right to disconnect, to unplug, to go their own way, without constant interference from "well-intentioned" people that are "concerned" about them. In fact the constant harassment from these people can be enough to bring someone down. The guy here is an adult, he has the right to life his life as he pleases.

Absolutely, and it's the GNOME camp where this awful excessively padded user interface style is coming from, and spreading across the platform to other desktop environments. Personally, I gave up on modifying the CSS theme files for GTK3 to reduce the ugliness - I made it just barely tolerable, but not any better than that.
Re:The emotional toll of caring for research animals

Animals get torn to pieces alive by predators on a routine basis in the wild. Many die before they even get the chance to reach maturity. I'm particularly upset that we are imprisoning people because they fed Cannabis to their hamster, when the normal routine life for animals is so barbaric anyway.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-lancashire-38906351 This is where the true outrage should be pointed at.
And those who want to abuse animals can do so legally, by live feeding it to their snake or lizard. It just makes my blood boil in anger.

More like telling the whole world "you're not allowed to copy this, because I wrote it" and threatening everyone with imprisonment or fines if you do. So everyone has to buy it through him, or else. To feed his family.
That is what copyright law fundamentally is.
We all learn from other people, just because I came up with an idea, I cannot tell other people "you're not allowed to use it". It violates other peoples natural right to autonomy to do so.
Re:Why Mac speakers sound so good

I wonder if malware could bypass the speaker safety daemon and potentially damage hardware or even start a fire? Looks like Apple is relying too much on TrustZone and Secure Boot to prevent physical hardware damage?
Also, Apple can now say that jailbreaking the devices could present a physical safety issue. So one more reason for making jailbreaking illegal?

I think VPNs give only a potentially dangerous illusion of anonymity given the widespread NSA surveillance and organizations such as Team Cymru collecting flow records from ISP core routers worldwide.

Re:Ask HN: If you were not laid off, how are your 1:1 meetings going?
on Tuesday February 14, 2023 @07:04AM (#34788205)
I'm not particularly fond of regular 1:1 meetings, my manager had one each week, and I thought it bordered on micromanagement. Much preferring to bring up my concerns / problems as they arise, and be otherwise left alone as much as possible.

I would consider the lack of support for animations a feature, not a limitation.
