This is just my hypothesis, but I think it's for "brand". They didn't destroyed only books but basically everything, because of this many cities surrendered without even trying to fight back. In that case your civilization was preserved. That's why the mongols were able to conquer so much so quickly, fear build on these horrible actions.

you still need to know what is appropriate to try. Depending on the problem there might be colossal mistakes that you can make just because you don't know what's behind the scenes.
I'm not saying that it isn't a tragedy but it's an order of magnitude less than WWII[1], or am I missing something?

Re:London vs San Francisco – back and forth on Tuesday March 01, 2016 @01:32PM (#11204886)
for me one of the best things in London is the weather, as it never gets too hot, It's sunny but not too much, and it doesn't rain as much as you would expect. But I have to say that I really hate too much sun and heat.
Re:London vs San Francisco – back and forth on Tuesday March 01, 2016 @01:24PM (#11204810)
I think they are talking about beautiful natural places where you can spend sometimes alone. It's my biased interpretation, living in London I don't care about musicals, museums (just because they are always full of people) or anything with concrete in it or crowded, I just want a beautiful place where I can spend some time alone.

>So what is your age limit? If 16, why not 15? And if 15, why not 12, or 10, or 7, or 5?

so why 18 then. The age limit is just a line in the sand that is different in differents states and for different things (driving, drinking, having sexual relationships)

Re:A Good Night’s Sleep Is Tied to Interruptions, Not Just Hours on Wednesday December 02, 2015 @09:00AM (#10662926)

Re:Turkey Shoots Down Russian Warplane Near Syrian Border on Tuesday November 24, 2015 @10:43AM (#10621333)
I think this is a fairly known scenarios, that strategists and leaders taught well in advance with all possible and military personnel are trained on. I also read in an article that the order to shot it down came from the turkish president.

Someone claimed that territory because his daughter's dream was to be a princess[1].

thanks! I didn't know about Cesanta so I made my own from scratch, but it is very bulky.
Thanks, that is my plan too, add as many sensor as I could! For the moment I have a microphone, a water level and a couple of temperature sensors waiting for a microcontroller.

Could you link a couple of links to resources you found useful? I haven't look at it properly but when I try to search I was a bit confused and not sure on where to start

I bought one as well although I didn't do anything yet, would you mind share what you did/recommend doing? I was thinking to make a temperature sensor monitoring device, as I have an arduino that is doing the job now
Re:Facebook paid £4,327 corporation tax in the UK in 2014 on Monday October 12, 2015 @07:57AM (#10373924)
maybe stupid question: do you expect a lot of fake contractors or there is another way? Because if they are contractors they wouldn't be part of those 362 in staff right?

Same experience here. I'm always shocked about the impact that small things, like coming across one of those pages when I was a teenager, can have on someone's life.

Re:The day I ordered pizza that 'doesn't exist' on Saturday August 08, 2015 @06:20AM (#10026860)
when I hear an order with pineapple or chicken I feel worst than that. I don't want to be graphic so I will just say it's like putting something really unpleasant on a pizza.
I'm sure during the Pax Romana a lot of people felt the same, or even after the First world war. After the plagues in the middle ages resources were abundant for everybody, even peasants..

we are no different than then, sure we think nowadays technology seems able to change everything, but before it was the same. Humans have always been innovating and increasing efficiency, yet they have always been fighting.

and companies were cool with it? I'm trying to do the same (data scientist) but I only get offers for perm or full-time contracts.

My understanding is that basic income is unconditional while social security has some conditions attached (e.g. you need to go to interviews)
Re:How to get a massive discount on college: get married on Saturday June 27, 2015 @07:52AM (#9789864)
>Why shacking up or pumping out kids gives the adults involved an advantage in their financial livelihoods is ridiculous

short answer: because without kids society (and so government) dies. It's becoming more and more expensive to raise them (at least in the western world).

In my opinion in most of Europe these benefits are not enough as it's one of the most important contribution to society an individual can give (I'm not a parent and I won't become one in the near future).

Re:Becoming a contractor programmer in the UK on Tuesday June 16, 2015 @08:10PM (#9729410)
Tangentially related: I'm a data scientist based in London, and I'm just thinking about becoming a contractor, but I don't see many position. I thought companies, because the strategic knowledge of the position, prefer to have those skills in house... do you think it's true?
you don't know how glad I feel reading this, i's exactly how I feel about linkedin, and I can't explain how a lot of people people like it, even my coworkers (Analytics team, pretty technical).
