looks the same as anything else these days
it would not surprise me to learn that in fact 80% of Oracle employees have turned over in five years (assuming the average employee is staying less than four years, which is consistent with what I have observed at similar big tech)

I once interviewed with Oracle Cloud (when it was going through its big-rewrite), and I was told the goal was to staff it with entirely new, not-Oracle people...the conclusion being that the first incarnation of Oracle Cloud failed partly due to staffing it internally

Re:Ask HN: How to live a alcohol/drug free lifestyle? on Tuesday June 13, 2023 @03:42AM (#36306897)
my advice is to migrate to a "clean" lifestyle:

1. 100% cleaned up healthy diet

2. regular exercise

3. good sleep

and being alcohol/drug-free comes along for free

I don't agree that social pressures make this impossible as others have suggested...I mean, does anyone here shun someone else at a party who isn't drinking/doing drugs? of course not

it is quite common these days to meet normal, successful people who don't drink, lead healthy lifestyles, you will not be a pariah

don't worry about popularity - people who are fit and healthy have no problems making friends as being in shape is inherently attractive

Free, and dead

No doubt the system is abused, but the solution isn't to eliminate all protections...Apple or Google have the money to instantly clone anything

Liberty Ale is a true classic of brewing, but you can find something like it in any city now

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is another classic and you can find it practically anywhere

no one has to make that choice

> This is a politically-"leftist" site (top current thread is "How did you get into anarchism", along with something about ACAB)

tbh how is this different than most subs?

this is a feature, not a bug...it keeps these people out of the real world and glued to their keyboards where their blast radius is limited to their own echo chamber

Re:Ask HN: Alternatives to Reddit on Monday June 12, 2023 @12:05PM (#36295766)
THIS!

most of the political/activist/policy-driven discussions on reddit have no impact on the real world and lots of energy is just dissipated into typing that goes in to a db and no further

case in point...most local subs are mobilized against NIMBYs...but NIMBYs tend to voice their concerns at City Council meetings (where it matters), not on the internet...guess who wins?

reddit just takes the energy out of activism and dissipates it

then why isn't Ars flipping out over Obama's declaration that codifying Roe "was not a priority" even when he wielded a Democrat supermajority?

I mean, if you can live in the past and blame Trump, why not live in the past and blame Obama?

It is easy to codify Roe v Wade and get it past SCOTUS...start asking your elected Democrats why they won't do it

By this time tomorrow the subs will be forced open and the offending mods turfed

By Friday it will all be forgotten

The economy doesn't need stimulus right now and probably not for years to come

we seem fine for grocery stores, which will always have more, better, fresher

living in Texas, I have a great HEB nearby and when I go to Canada I feel like I am in some 80s communist country when I go into Loblaw's

He knows the "landlords" have no leverage
no, because Microsoft has made it abundantly clear that their future is in Azure, AI, services for any platform...

not Intel either, since they are staking a future in being a fab for anyone

Dell (and Lenovo, and HP) should be very worried though, they are more singularly dependent on Windows than either Microsoft or Intel

I don't see any PC makers screwing up the courage to imagine a post-Windows world, but they had better start thinking about it

Re:Can AI make older adults feel less lonely? on Saturday June 10, 2023 @02:38PM (#36273501)
you can't cure loneliness with AI

you can't cure loneliness with Apple Vision Pro

you can't cure loneliness with anything else that relegates you to being alone in your apartment interacting only with digital technology

quite the opposite...we will just breed a new generation of super-psychos who cannot cope with other real people and will snap in increasingly destructive ways

the people you describe aren't buying $7k desktops
huh? Solo LOST money

> LPs are the real decision-makers on capital allocation

is this true? afaik they hand over their money and trust the partners to allocate

> and almost all of them are pension funds.

pension funds can go to taxpayers for a bailout and CalPERs has done so before

this is why it is not a great idea for pension funds to play in venture capital...it isn't fair for taxpayers who have to pay out the losses to keep the pensions running

Re:Apple has a shot at solving the mental health crisis on Friday June 09, 2023 @11:50AM (#36259683)
being on screens does not improve your mental health

HN needs to start screening out the relentless, mindless Apple fanfic posts

most medical practices have your test results available online

not sure why/how you need to merge blood tests and watch data for a meaningful benefit

otherwise, spend time cleaning up your diet and improving your exercise and sleep...you can't get healthy just moving data around

Re:Ask HN: How can a junior dev maximize their income? on Thursday June 08, 2023 @11:29AM (#36243539)
whatever you do, use whatever money you earn to become an OWNER of something

this is an economy of owners and renters, you will be one or the other

so buy an income property to rent out, etc

otherwise, you are always just someone who works for someone else

people who try to succeed just based on their salary will be disappointed unless it is a mammoth salary (becoming more rare in sw)
