I'm always confused to see this point brought up. Whenever there are lots of options, folks talk about the harms of fragmentation and wasted effort and focus. Whenever there aren't a lot of options, it seems like the same crowd demands disruption and competing choices.

Different people, probably. I'm all for consolidation whenever the problem space is very well defined, and divergence whenever the problem space is ill defined. This is a case of the former.
