While I'm not too sure that understanding the CAFEBABE stuff is truly helpful for improving Java performance, I definitely agree its helpful to know what's going on in there. Bytecode usually decompiles into very neat code since the mapping between the code and bytecode is very tight with most optimisations taking place in the JVM.
