oo. I'd forgotten about fix.

  cycleM = fix . mplus
gives a nice generic version that works on Lists & Sequences but falls afoul of the monomorphism restriction, so it needs a type:

  cycleM :: (MonadPlus m) => m a -> m a
  cycleM = fix . mplus
