Right, but the article jokes specifically about atheists.

This century they sure are a peaceful bunch - but past record is pretty atrocious.

On the other hand, one could make a case that communists were not 'true' atheists - they just replaced Jesus with Marx-Lenin-Mao, but ostensibly they espoused atheism.
