Sentence enhancement for hate crimes is essentially a form of thought crime, since "proving" you had certain thoughts in your head changes your sentence. There are interesting arguments both ways on hate crime sentencing, but make no mistake, it is sentencing you to (more) prison for your thoughts, not your actions.
