  * squid reverse proxies
  * memcached
  * low memory footprint httpd serving static content (e.g. nginx / lighttpd etc.)

I didn't know about Varnish so I found the link: http://varnish.projects.linpro.no/. There's commercial support for it too: http://varnish-cache.com/
