Contrary anecdote. I have an HP laptop from 2004 I still use for some tasks. I have an HP11c I use almost daily.

None of which proves the new device is any good.

I don't think yours is contrary; you're probably a data point in the other 75% that didn't fail. I don't think a single data point could ever be contrary to anything since it would never represent an aggregate. Since I have a dead HP notebook, I could claim that I have a 100% failure rate using your logic.
