Networking freezers is good for: * continuous monitoring and logging of the freezer's temperature (supermarkets are obliged to do so) * sending alerts when something's off

Regarding the defrosting: Commercial freezers can defrost while the groceries stay in, just like the "No-Frost" freezer at home.

Monitoring/logging/alerting can all be done without storing the network connected computer up to anything that can change the temperature settings. It can and should be a completely separate system.
