Microsoft is a really shitty place to work right now. There are a hundred stories like this all over the company like this.

I am a 25 year vet (in two parts) and I am thinking of throwing the towel and going to work at Anthropic like everyone else.

They've offered voluntary redundancy to a quite large proportion of the staff (a quarter?) so they'll also soon be losing anyone with employment prospects elsewhere.

I see a lot of news about waves of layoffs in large tech companies. Is MS the only shitty place now? I think all of them are, maybe except OpenAI & Anthropic, since they're building something new and are kind of on the "good" side right now.

Something tells me the only “good thing” in those two companies is the pay.

They look more like complete organizational shit shows.

Yep, from what I hear and see, it's like this everywhere. It actually started with the Twitter layoffs and has spread across the industry. At first, it seemed like a reaction to the ZIRP-era overhiring, but it's kept going long after correcting for it, and with AI has been cemented as the modus operandi for many companies.

From the outside, Microsoft seems to actually be one of the better places, and is making at least token efforts to reduce headcount in more amicable ways, as exemplified the buyout offer.

But in general, the strategy seems to be overload people until they burn out and quit, because hey, AI will replace them anyway.
