There's another big element that is being completely overlooked.
People who use API keys on their dime are usually running DeepSeek 4.x or GLM 5.x (Flash or otherwise) and similar models.
RE: Subsidies:
What if subscription costs are still high enough to be profitable (I believe they are for OpenAI).
Then maybe we should be saying that API users are paying an order of magnitude more than the cost, at least at the very top end (frontier models). Likely because big cos are willing to pay top dollar for what is the best and unmatched elsewhere.
