There certainly is cleverness that is detrimental/too clever, but there's also cleverness that genuinely solves the problem better. And I'd agree that its frowned upon for as its not the status quo, unfortunately... Doesn't use the latest hot new thing or whatever.

Most time i spent in bug fixing or extending features was in code that tried to be clever and over engineered. e.g. "Let's use the visitor pattern with double dispatch to do dependency injection" vs "just adapt the methods and done".
