He makes his people lie or do stupid and demeaning things as a way of testing their loyalty to him.

I recall reading that totalitarian states did this kind of thing - they forced people to say lies and absurd things, as a way of demonstrating power over them (and also as a way of destroying their ability to tell true from false and right from wrong).

Well, this isn't a dictatorship, and I ain't playing along. I'll call it what I choose, not what I'm told.

I'm observing the same tactic in the gangster series Mobland.

When pressuring a witness, etc, the gangster will always end the intimidation with making the victim repeat whatever humiliating or farcical line the gangster wants to be the new reality. It's forcing a visible submission.
