Anecdotal, but I've never managed to get FreeBSD to reach 10 Gbps.
Attempted over the years using TrueNAS CORE (file sharing) or OpnSense (routing). Tested NICs have been Mellanox and Intel. Across two different machines, one being a Dell PowerEdge R720.
I'm sure some full-time sysadmin knows some secret performance tweak but nothing in the first 2 pages of Google managed to solve it.
Switched the file server over to TrueNAS SCALE, full speed. Switched the router over to OpenWrt, full speed.
