The Ukrainian people wanted to align more with the EU. They have a sovereign country which isn't part of Russia. They had no plans to invade Russia and even if they had joined NATO they wouldn't have had because NATO is purely a defense platform and so diverse they can't even agree how to fold their napkins. It is not a credible threat to Russia unless Russia attacks them.

In Putin's own speech before the war he described the Ukrainian people as subservient to Russia, a people who have no legitimacy of their own. Just good enough to be a "crumple zone" for mother Russia.

And how is Russia fighting for it's existence in taking over a country that wasn't part of it?

You didn't, and don't, care about the rights of people seeing themselves as a part of the Russian people leaving in Ukraine. You didn't, and don't care when they are abused, get their language and culture robbed away from them by the crazy ukranian nationalists, when they get kidnapped and murdered (yes, it was happening also before the 2022 invasion).

You didn't, and don't, care what kind of danger the Ukranian NATO ally would have posed to Russia. (We see now what that means, and eventually it would become this way also without the 2022 invasion, because NATO is "defensive" only for people refusing to accept reality).

You had no moral problems to equate Russia with the nazi Germany to justify pumping weapons and "military counselors" to Ukraine. I could continue here ad infinitum.

As for being your mercenaries against Russia, the Ukranian government and nationalists strived for thar, the rest of the population perhaps understood it later. But you can be sure they all understand it now.
