This Kickstarter project with a completely new, futuristic looking airplane design seems fairly confident that there is.

http://www.fzt.haw-hamburg.de/pers/Scholz/Airport2030/Airpor... reckons a ~10% efficiency increase, but the wing is twice as heavy!
