I would be more inclined to be sympathetic to the cause of the author, and the ridiculous amount of people who upvoted this (wow, demographics change on HN, pg wasn't kidding) were he/she to show more than a three hour understanding of CSS.

Obviously, when you can produce something like this: http://www.csszengarden.com/, showing how a single html page can be manipulated in an infinite number of ways, it isn't CSS that's lacking, but your knowledge of it.

I'm sorry if this isn't the popular opinion on this board, but as someone that coded tables and then made the transition, I can assure you that css is a much more powerful medium for web page layout, despite its quirks.

I thought grandparent was referring more to the quality of the content than the claims of the argument.

The markup on CSS Zen Garden makes use of things like layers of wrapper divs to achieve what it does in terms of design. And this means the HTML is being used for more than just content, which is a direct controversion of CSS's goals. The site is actually a good example of what is wrong with the subset of CSS that is currently practical to use.

Are there any examples in the css Zen Garden which have the really boring layout described in the article? Three columns which have the same height regardless of the height of the content in each column?

If so, I'd love to see how they did it. The best way I know is to fake it using well designed background images. Quite painful to do.
