Your comment is valid as a criticism of the "unfettered free market", but further proves my point that things that work will win.
Opioids work better than anything else at removing the sensation of pain. There are, of course, drawbacks to pumping everyone full of opioids in unlimited doses, and not cracking down on the rampant systemic fraud that enabled this. Opioids in reasonably-prescribed amounts are a godsend to people in serious pain.
