The project will limp along regardless. If you want to see it succeed, you should stop repeating the same name non-issue and send patches instead. If it was truly a great program people wouldn't care what it was called.

Alternatively; fork the program yourself and change the name. It's not going to hit Blender levels of popularity overnight, but at least HN could sleep better knowing the name isn't an icky Folsom Street thing. It's getting tiring to open every GIMP changelog discussion and see people worried about Grandma's opinion on the software.
