I can't speak for the Verge. But we all know that rvz is correct in the broad sense. According to the media and on Reddit and much of HN, since Musk bought Twitter, Mastodon, Bluesky and Threads have collectively gained 70 bazillion users on seventeen different occasions, and have caused Twitter to collapse and disappear eleven times.
