How I expect this really played out:
You show up to your advisor meeting, and it turns out he's a boomer who clearly Doesn't Get It and is Part Of The Problem. It's plain from his faded tie and insistence that you choose a major that will give you some earning potential in your later life that he's happily ensconced within the system that has benefited his generation at the expense of all generations to come, and has no interest in the kind of urgent social change that you know is necessary to restore justice to the world. But, being the good guy that you are, you decide to take the high road by merely heavily implying that he and his kind are responsible for everything bad in society, instead of directly insulting him. The old fool probably won't even realise it's happening anyway!
Having just listened to 10 other students say essentially the same thing slightly less arrogantly, he loses patience and turns the implications of your naive moral grandstanding back on you.
Years later, you still haven't found a solid rebuttal to his suggestion -- but you have found a place where you can recount your ordeal and win some sympathy, provided you conceal enough of the original context.
