That's your reason to use something 'freer'? To avoid a screenshot sound?

They're talking about agency. Having control of the hardware they bought. The screenshot sound is just a convenient example.

It's maddening that I tell my phone to stay quiet and it disobeys.

All that code and settings live in a protected partition. If I have to root my phone for this at least I'd like it to be nicer to hack on.
