Also: Don't get so enamoured by the idea of incremental progress, of scientific legacy, that you can scarcely imagine the idea that everybody you know might have taken a wrong turn 30, or 50, or 400 years ago. Science is the study of what is _not_ true, of falsification: how _not_ to cure a patient, how _not_ to go to the moon. It says nothing about what _is_. (That's the domain of engineering.)

The discovery of germs did not prove the non-existence of prions.

Thank you! Please try to upvote my comment under dredmorbius' top subthread. We need to generate discussion on this precise social conflict in order to save lives

the questions of good faith vs bad faith or whether we should trust experts need to be slightly deproritized

Thank your service! I understand that you might be embarrassed to toot your own horn further, but is it okay to link to your work? It is important to understand the nuance of this crucial sociological process above, I can't imagine a situation where more documentation won't help..

IMHO, "social concepts" grokked from doing cutting edge science and from doing things other than cutting edge science tend to contradict each other, a sad phenomenon that underlies the larger cognitive dissonance..

"Science is the belief in the ignorance of experts" --RPF, also believed by experts.
