San Francisco is extremely safer than Englewood, and earlier this year my wife and kids still found themselves in the middle of some kind of Norteno-Sureno shootout. They didn't get hit, though! So no harm, no foul.
Alarmist, certainly. Certainly alarmist compared to your normal Chicago sources of information, which as I recall insisted that the beaches on a certain day last summer were closed due to "temperatures in the '90s:"
