I found [this suggestion](https://stackoverflow.com/questions/4697100/accessibility-re...), although it's pretty old. Maybe screen readers have made improvements to this scenario in the last few years?

        <title>[title]</title>
        <desc>[long description]</desc>
        ...
    </svg>
