It’s not “whatever.” In the 90s, Yugoslavia ceased to be the unified south Slavic state and only included Serbia and Montenegro.

It's whatever related to the domain name. The name Yugoslavia still existed, and if it was acceptable for them to take part in the World Cup it was acceptable enough for ICANN to keep the .yu domain.
