Proton is great. But it isn't windows.
I play games with proton every day and every single title I've ever played in it has had noticeable issues. Most are minor and the game is perfectly playable. Some are just annoying performance issues. Shaders taking forever to load so maps are unplayable the first few iterations until they're all cached.. stuff like that. And a few that are completely game breaking.
Virtually no one (outside of SteamOS or whatever it's called) is choosing to game in Linux over Windows at the moment. The experience just isn't that good yet. They game in linux because they already use linux for something else and don't want to dual boot or have a separate desktop.
It's absolutely amazing that we can do that these days. If you told me 5 years ago that I'd play 98% of my games on linux, I'd have laughed in your face. It's awesome how far it's come.
But it's objectively worse than playing on windows.
