I have similar thoughts. If this is real it is hard to believe that Korean government was not involved in it.

The research was funded in part by the National Research Foundation, a subsidiary of the Korean government.

It's pretty easy to bullshit your way into these funding arrangements, though, and this project did look like bullshit until very recently. So I don't think it's likely that the Korean government ever took a serious look at LK-99 until now.
