I think the best wouldn't be asking internet randos. The best would be asking for a preliminary consultation with a lawyer, asking their opinion if it's even worth pursuing chasing this down.

Given that this is a place with a disproportionate number of "internet randos" who have experienced the same problem, I'd say that it's worth asking - and then weighting responses by level of experience.
