Nobody denies its their right, but that doesn't mean it's not a very stupid action, motivated by dumb nationalism. You can't handwave circumstances away, as if the legislators don't know it is a cashgrab against foreign corporations and genuinely believe Google and Facebook are Canadian companies.

If you're registered in Canada as "Facebook Canada" and "Google Canada" then yes, you ARE a Canadian company. You can't have both the benefits of being locally registered and protected/treated like other domestic organisations but also pretend you have no unique responsibilities to the country you're making money from.
The amount of people here riding Facebook and Google's dick is absurd, and no one here at all are even the slightest perturbed by the fact that two major private corporate entities are trying to basically strongarm a sovereign nation into enacting its own legislation? It's disgusting.
I also love the choice of CTV news, the most corporate-friendly trash in Canada which ofcourse is highlighting the "fallout" first and foremost oh and look, the Canadian Minister didn't respond in time to our story but we'll quote at length the Google propagandist.

I don't think it adds anything to the discussion to personify and sexualize these companies.

It’s not dumb nationalism, it’s typical lobbying, sold as nationalism.

What's new?
We have been using that same excuse to block out Japanese and Chinese goods in various eras.
Just feels weird the Canadians are copying our playbook
