I think there is some loss of understanding of how conquest and colonialism were the norms of the day. This is represented in who Japan was fighting for control of countries.

Japan took Korea from China, hence it being a Sino-Japanese war. Japan took control of Manchuria form Russia. They took Indochina from the French.
