Expert knowledge has insights, meta-knowledge if you will. It is the insights, the ability to see the thing and then see the stuff that go into it being that thing, which give the exponential returns.

There's plenty of expert knowledge within each domain, though. It seems that simply being a fresh pair of eyes has an acute effect on success.
Hamming suggested it, "You need to get into a new field to get new viewpoints, and /before/ you use up all the old ones."
