In the UK we have this concept of "the local" pub, often where you'd go and meetup with friends for a catchup.

yeah, I am a bit confused by the statement. I have never planned this, it just happens after repeatedly meeting at the same pub in some frequency. I've also seen a shared, regular activity create this, for example the monthly pub quiz or sneak preview in the independent cinema.
