The main point of the NY Times article dude was provoked by was actually "silicon valley no longer makes silicon (hardware)", not that there's age discrimination. The correlation with age is just because hardware used to be the big thing, and thus people who were working here back then did hardware.

Younger people who are unwilling to move away from hardware are often going to be unemployed in Silicon Valley; older designers and software engineers won't be.
