This article is interesting. It discusses the history of firearms and the evolution of bullet sizes. Like how certain calibers have fallen out of use over time and why some are popular while others are not with gun enthusiasts. I found the history of some odd calibers like .32 acp , .380 acp, and the .38 special kinda fascinating. This author definitely is a gun enthusiasts but makes many interesting points regarding the historical background of calibers. Cool read thanks!

What, no, this comment is a complete fiction!

The article is a kind of true crime story about a British antique weapons enthusiast who sold weapons and self-made ammunition to a guy who turned out to be supplying a criminal street gang.

Yeah, the encryption doesn't help when you keep the messages in an unencrypted form. If it is convenient for you to see the archived messages then it is usually convenient for others to see them as well.

Enjoyable read. It looks like the real mistake Paul made was making his illicit sale bullets in the same way he made his normal stock.

Of course, he could have also avoided any legal scrutiny by himself being above board and only selling the bullets his clients were legally authorized.

"It was a travesty, the kind of sweeping overreaction that more paranoid collectors and members of shooting clubs had long feared but that most could hardly imagine coming to pass: In one fell swoop, parliament effectively banned all small firearms with barrels shorter than 12 inches."

Uuuuuh, hello? We had a *school shooting*, you know?

Fifteen 5-year-old children and their teacher killed, sixteen 5-year-old children wounded.

Collectively, the people of the UK decided that people should not be allowed to carry guns around.

No-one remotely sane could disagree.

Or, all that happened was the guns in use went from being standard and traceable to being obscure and untraceable. You don't automatically get to decide who is sane and who is not based on your religious beliefs.

This comment is meaningless unless it also discuses the decrease in number of "the guns in use". Or lack of decrease, but I don't think that's factual.
Re:Odd Caliber by Brian_K_White on Sunday March 26, 2023 @05:09PM (#35319659)
...which are themselves also meaningless unless they also factor yet other context like all kinds of other social and economic factors, total population, population density, possible translation to other crimes using other tools or taking other forms, and other undesirable outcomes. It's kind of like a form of externalizing costs. Maybe bathtub suicides and protection racket shakedowns and stabbings went up but if you only pick one number and say it went down, or is less than someone else's while using absolute numbers instead of percentages and in context,..

If you only care about one number and it's so important that none of those other factors matter, then you shouldbe advocating for universal drugged stupor, which would garantee the lowest possible number of gun deaths. I don't see how you can possibly place your own desire to have a clear head and some sense of agency over yourself above the life of even one innocent child.

And this deranged comment is just straight-up meaningless word salad.
Re:Odd Caliber by Brian_K_White on Monday March 27, 2023 @04:36AM (#35324304)
You don't understand how a metric only has meaning within a context?
Re:Odd Caliber by SideburnsOfDoom on Monday March 27, 2023 @04:56AM (#35324424)
Is that an argument that you're trying to make? I can't tell, and don't know what that is or why it would be relevant. It's literally meaningless pseudo-intellectual waffle.
Re:Odd Caliber by Gordonjcp on Sunday March 26, 2023 @04:44PM (#35319378)
I mean, we have had exactly *one* school shooting in 30 years, so by any measure I'd say it worked.
